About Spicers Balfour Hotel

A burst of rich green bamboo and ivy pops against the moody, sensual blacks of a historic Queenslander. Moments away, bold white stucco walls are lifted by grand pillars and shaped by the timeless curves of an art deco classic. This stunning architectural contrast works perfectly, just as the flavours of Vietnam and France dance flawlessly in the kitchen. The urban cool here is palpable, and the sincere commitment to modern imperatives of social responsibility and sustainability are quite possibly unmatched. Sitting in close conversation with the sights and sounds of an eclectic inner-city enclave, Spicers Balfour Hotel is a unique urban experience that simultaneously embraces its colourful past and confidently leans into the future. Proving indulgence and ethics can comfortably co-exist, this retreat takes an intelligent stance, whilst providing guests the chance to savour the very best of a city on the move. From the sunset filled roof top bar to the leafy garden courtyards, from the thoughtful, modern suites to the crimson velvet chairs waiting invitingly in the library, luxury is found at every turn. Hidden surprises offer themselves cautiously to attentive guests, and sumptuous textures and finishes proudly present without restraint. The rust coloured rooves of the heritage listed cottages surrounding the retreat paint an intriguing picture of a treasured era, while shimmering city lights promise adventure of another kind. Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword at Balfour. An unwavering dedication to reducing environmental impact has seen Balfour running initiatives such as energy efficient fridges, motion activated air-conditioning, solar night lighting, a no plastic policy agreed with all suppliers, composting waste to provide soil for local parks – even providing avocado skins to a local artist to use in the creation of inks – these are all examples of the innovative thinking on display. The theme continues in Balfour Kitchen & Bar, where sustainably sourced seafood and ethically farmed meats are teamed with the freshest of local produce to create an award winning modern Vietnamese treasure. The distinctive sweet, hot, sour and salty flavours of Vietnamese cooking are constantly re-imagined, while respecting the traditions of French and Asian cuisines: the result is a stylish fusion that delivers dishes such as octopus with cassia and anise crème, katsuobushi, finger lime and micro coriander, or pho spiced brisket with shao hsing jus, jackfruit and bone marrow butter. Balfour’s 17 luxury suites are split across two unique buildings. The nine executive rooms in the main Queenslander building have a distinct European feel, and the eight one-bedroom suites in the art-deco Simla building are filled with richly embellished designs and a sleek aesthetic. All suites are light, bright and airy, with spacious and luxurious bathrooms, amenities and modern conveniences. The surrounding streets of New Farm are crammed with metropolitan street chic, and the much-loved local cafes, restaurants, bars, cinemas and boutiques are the creative and cultural heartbeat of the city. The nearby James Street and Howard Smith Wharves entertainment and lifestyle precincts literally burst with activity, while the winding Brisbane River and leafy local parks provide peaceful sanctuary.

My partner and I visited here last night for dinner. What a hidden little gem! The food and wine was delicious. Great portions for the price. We recieved wonderful service from Murray, who was looking after our table. He was friendly and very helpful with any questions we had about the wines and menu. We will definitely be returning, maybe we'll try breakfast next time and see if it's just as good!

My husband & I have just enjoyed the most wonderful stay at the Balfour Hotel, starting with a phone call from Maxine letting us know of an early check in availability and an upgrade to a delightful Studio on arrival. We enjoyed a drink on the rooftop bar & a delicious dinner at the restaurant. Maxine and all the staff we interacted with during our stay are a credit to management. Thank you all for your wonderful service to your guests. We will most definitely be back again!

Both as accommodation and a restaurant this place has it all. You would be a hard marker to fault our experience. Watching the staff out of the corner of your eye you got the feeling morale was good and it showed through. Food was sensational. Wines great and all served by great people. Do yourself a favour.

We were so disappointed with our stay. We had been looking forward to the quality and service for which Spicers in renowned, however the dirty roof top bar covered in bird droppings, and the thick layer of dust in the bathroom were just the start. On check in we were informed of a cocktail class and gin tasting activity on the roof top bar at 4 only to find it initially unstaffed and with no activities at all. The social hour drink and nibbles advertised in our room was also initially non-existent until we had to convince the staff it was advertised in their brochures left in the rooms. From the leaking basin and lose electrical power point and for the price the service and cleanliness was just not up to standard.

Celebrated my uni graduation at this wonderful warm and welcoming restaurant. Favourite dish was the shark scallop and beef cheeks and loved the wildberry and gin cocktails. Highly recommend this place for a special occasion, could not fault the service or food. 5 star atmosphere and great views on the rooftop.

Was greeted at the door with such lovely smiling faces full of great knowledge and understanding of their space and menu.nThe whole experience was lovely, after eating spent some time on the rooftop bar and was treated to one of the best martinis I've ever had!!! The bartender was great to talk to and I can't wait to come back for more of her delicious cocktails!

Rooms were amazing and beautiful.nThe included breakfast day after was amazing.nCheck in was easy as well.nUnfortunately they lose a few stars for charging us for the mini bar when we didn't use it (we brought our own champagne but used the glasses, then assumed we used their champagne and charged us). Didn't bother calling to check and just sent us the bill. When we contacted them they refused to answer for several hours and eventually made contact 48hrs later. Not the best when your on your honeymoon trying to enjoy a stress free time.

Phenomenal experience from the first step into the property until I left. The facilities are amazing, the staff are just out of this world, the food is so good. Could not have asked for a better stay-cation. Also, the zero waste and net zero emissions policies are to be applauded. Thank you for a wonderful time away!

We loved our stay at Balfour. The restaurant rightly had rave reviews and rewards - big portions so beware! Brekkie was perfection each morning - with some surprises on the menu each day. The hotel itself is a stunning old home converted. Rooms are small but perfect. The location is amazing. New Farm is less than a 5 min walk to the hustle and bustle of Howard Street Wharf (restaurants/bars etc) but you can sleep like a baby as the hotel rooms are quiet as. Don't miss the roof-top bar, the high-tea if you can get it and best of all the staff are all amazing. Kenny is the best and that is really saying something. If you want to escape the rain and cold, Brisbane was warm, sunny and fab. Worth a visit.

My husband and I celebrated my 50th birthday by staying in one of the Balfouru2019s Art Deco suites. Jack the manager person showed us to the suite and even explained a little about the history of the building which was really interesting!nThe staff were amazing. Friendly, knowledgeable and and attentive to all of our needs.nThe suite had a blue tooth speaker which was great and a lovely deep bath that even my hubby fit in! The suite was impeccably clean and the bed truly comfortable!nI definitely recommend staying here for a romantic get away. The cocktails in the rooftop bar were amazing as was the view of the Story Bridge!

We made a last minute reservation to stay here after some car issues meant we couldnu2019t move on with our plans until the following day. We were made to feel welcome right from start and all staff were very pleasant and helpful.nCar parking very limited so first come, first served.nWe didnu2019t eat dinner in the restaurant as it was fully booked so canu2019t comment on that but we did have breakfast the following morning. I ordered poached eggs on toast with cherry tomatoes and bacon. Whilst it was tasty enough I think presentation could have been better considering where we were, some greenery, micro herbs etc would have just been enough to make it look more appealing, and not something from the local cafe.nThe room (we were on the ground floor) was small but comfortable. The bathroom lighting was lacking in my opinion and very dull. I couldnu2019t open the door onto the courtyard outside the room, not sure if it was locked. There was loose leaf tea provided in the room with only 1 small tea pot so we couldnu2019t each have a different flavour of tea. I guess if weu2019d asked, another would have been provided.nI liked that I could stream Netflix from my device to the TV in the room.nAll in all a pleasant stay and somewhere that I would recommend.
