Discovering Rotterdam’s architecture

Meet Marco is a Utrecht content creator whose passion lies in photographing contemporary architecture using symmetrical compositions and a minimal style. The Netherlands boasts a ton of architectural masterpieces and the new Depot @boijmans van Beuningen is unarguably one of them. The Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen in @rotterdam_info is the first art storage facility in the world that offers access to a museum’s complete collection without the mediation of a curator. The Depot has a different dynamic to that of the museum: there are no exhibitions, but the public can browse amongst 151,000 artworks, alone or with a guide, and get behind-the-scenes glimpses of conservation, restoration and provenance research. MVRDV MVRDV architects (by Winy Maas, also responsible for the Markthal design) won the architectural competition to design the Depot in 2014. Their design has a rounded bowl form covered with reflective cladding. The façade’s reflection of the surrounding Museumpark will make the building fuse with its environment.
