About

A visit to the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood is an excellent opportunity to learn about the old way of life that was once prevalent in Dubai, as well as the rich traditions that can be found in the architecture and distribution of the houses. For example, the community’s concern for privacy can be seen in the lack of front windows, as well as their narrowness and height. Also, the narrow and twisted alleys and pathways, as well as erecting all of the district buildings facing south west towards the qibla, as well as a host of traditions and ideals that will become clear if the tourist visits Al Fahidi Neighbourhood. Buildings with high air towers (Barajeel), built with traditional building materials such as stone, gypsum, teak, sandalwood, fronds, and palm wood, are aligned side by side, separated by alleys, pathways, and public squares, which give the neighborhood its distinct character. Due to its strategic position on Dubai Creek (Khor Dubai), this district played a significant role in the management of Dubai and the organization of its international trade ties. Furthermore, it is now the district next to the divan of His Highness the Monarch of Dubai. The district’s buildings are also home to a variety of public and private cultural and creative events, ranging from art galleries to specialized museums, cultural and artistic organizations, ateliers, and cultural centres (such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Center for Cultural Understanding). Seasonal cultural and creative activities, such as the Sikka Art Fair, Artists-in-Residence Program, Heritage Week, National Day Events, and religious festivities, are held in the district. Beautiful and cozy cafés, pubs, and motels brimming with history can be found in the area.
